Really? Do you really want to start a business with your best friend?
Just because you get along, doesn’t mean he or she’s got the right stuff… or, maybe it’s you who isn’t qualified. Why put yourselves in a situation where someone is sure to disappoint? Really? Really.
Think hard about your willingness to sacrifice your relationship. It’s a gamble, and much like at Vegas, the odds aren’t in your favor.
Your intuition might say you can succeed with the people you know best, but sometimes your counter-intuition is what matters most.
Weak ties are your most valuable business relationships. Partnering with your weak ties will often make more sense because your relationship is usually centered a common business interest. Maybe you met at last week’s “Web 2.0 Geek Fest”, or maybe you’re both bloggers on the same topic. Whatever it is, that bond is more relevant than the bond you might have with your BFF (Best Friend Forever) who knew you in second grade.
Sure, there are exceptions - but the point is: don’t take the easy way in, and make sure you choose your partners wisely.
You might think - well, how can I trust a complete stranger? You can’t. At least, not at first. So get to know them. Stalk Research them online. Do the Due - Due diligence. Don’t be lazy. Take your time. Cast a wider net. Shop Around. Starting building your network NOW for connections that might materialize into opportunities years later.
Remember: It’s easy to hire your friends, and a nuisance to hire strangers. But. It’s a nuisance to fire strangers, and almost impossible to fire your best friend.Continue Reading...
