Mission

An increasing number of startups are funded by entrepreneurs in college and business school each year. This number is likely to continue increasing due to the increasing number of inititiaves, entrepreneurial programs at universities, and business plan competitions that encourage students to commercialize new technologies.

College Mogul was founded to track and profile this growing trend, promote the growth of college entrepreneurship, and provide resources for first time entrepreneurs.

History

College Mogul was first conceptualized by Alex Lindahl, Boston College, and Miles Lennon , Columbia University during their senior years in college. Alex and Miles observed that students like themselves in undergrad and grad school, as well as recent graduates, were realizing the value in building their own assets as a means to achieving career goals. This ambition is being cultivated by a growing number of entrepreneurial programs in colleges and incubator companies that have spawned the creation of thousands of new startups founded by young entrepreneurs each year.

Instead of attending classes and senior year events Alex and Miles were pitching venture capitalists, writing business plans, and raising over $100k in seed financing for their startup, Textworks. Ironically, it was their side project, College Mogul, that ended up placing 1st in the Boston College Venture Competition and eventually taking off.

After graduation, Alex and Miles secured positions at recently founded, venture-backed startups (Acquia and UpCompany, respectively), where they continue to work. Since then, the College Mogul team has grown to include other entrepreneurs, journalists, industry experts, inventors, and venture capitalists - all with the same goal in mind: help young entrepreneurs succeed and build innovative startups.

Resources for Entrepreneurs

Part of our goal is help entrepreneurs get connected to the right resources. We aim to do this by connecting promising startups to venture capitalists, angel investors, media contacts, marketing specialists, and industry experts.

If we believe your startup has potential, we may help you get connected with some of the following venture capital firms that we're friends with: Highland Capital Partners, North Bridge Venture Partners, GreatPoint Ventures, Polaris Ventures, General Catalyst, the Virgin Group, Boston Common Angels, Union Square Ventures, and several others.
