The healthcare industry has many different careers. One of these is dentistry. Everyone wants a healthy smile, and while you can do some things at home to help you maintain a great smile, in order to make sure your teeth stay healthy, you really need to see a dentist twice a year. A dentist as well as others working in this industry are very important. Not only do they help people keep their beautiful smile, they also help people fix problems they have with their teeth. These can be anything from braces, to dentures, or oral surgery.
There are a number of dentistry fields, and while we can’t talk about them all, here are some of the most common. One of them is the orthodontist. This person specializes in teeth positioning and jaw alignment. They can use a number of different tools to help realign a person’s teeth. Some of these include retainers, full braces, and other appliances that help straighten a person’s teeth and jaw. There is the oral surgeon. This doctor specializes in mouth surgery. Some of the job descriptions here are preparing someone for dentures, by removing existing teeth, resetting the jaw, as well as other tasks.
One of the most common careers in dentistry is of course the dental hygienist. What is a dental hygienist? They are people who have been certified to do a number of tasks around the dental office. Some of them have to do with working directly with patients. They do exams, clean and polish teeth. They take X rays of the mouth, looking for cavities and other problems in the mouth. They will also apply any surface adhesives, and administer fluoride treatments.
They also work with patients in other ways. Before and after exams and treatments they will sit down with the patient, explaining what is going to be done, what was done, and ways the patient can continue preventive measures at home. This may mean that they explain to younger kids how to properly brush and floss their teeth. It can be educating patients on how to properly take care of braces or their dentures.
One of the most important aspects of a dental hygienist is that they take care of all the patient records. This can include but is not limited to taking patient histories when they come into the office, gathering information on insurance, and making sure everything is up to date. It also means sitting down with the patient, going over any problems they may have with their teeth, concerns about procedures, and helping them feel more comfortable with going to the dentist in the first place. Being a dental hygienist takes more education than just being an assistant, but the pay is much higher overall. Depending on where you live, an entry level dental hygienist can earn $12-$15 an hour. Dental hygienists are also in demand around the country, probably as much as a certified nurse’s aid.
If you would like to know how to become a dental hygienist, there are online resources that can help. One of them is dentalhygienistschools101.org/. This website includes all sorts of useful information about this career.
