The extreme heat of summer can affect your body in many ways. It can be very dangerous, causing all kinds of health problems. While we can’t talk about all the problems and how to take care of them, here are some of the major ones and tips to help prevent them. One of the biggest problems people face during the summer is heat exhaustion, the beginning of the more fatal version, heat stroke.
What is heat exhaustion? It’s when you are overworking yourself, through exercising, working in a place with high temperatures, or even playing sports. What happens is you start sweating profusely, causing your body to increase blood flow to the extremities in order to try to cool you down. Heavy perspiration also takes moisture away from your vital organs. Between this and less blood flow to these organs, your body will start to go into shock. You get tired, you start feeling run down, and want to go to sleep. Following this is heat stroke, where your body’s natural cooling system starts to shut down completely. Your internal temperature rises, and you literally boil from the inside. This causes catastrophic organ failure, brain damage, then death.
One of the biggest things you can do to help prevent this is to make sure you drink enough water on a daily basis. This means that you need to figure out how much you weigh, divide that by 6, then almost double it. This is how many ounces of water you should be drinking every day during the hottest part of the summer, or when there is a heat wave. Cool water does a lot for your body. It cools down your internal temperature, replaces the moisture when you sweat, and improves circulation.
Who is the most susceptible to these major heat problems? The elderly, those under ten, those that are diabetic, or have some kind of autoimmune disease are the most vulnerable. However, anyone of any age can experience heat exhaustion and heat stroke, if they’re over exerting themselves.
You need to get out of the sun, and stay somewhere cool during the day. If you can, you need some kind of air conditioning, or ceiling fans installed in your home.
