It’s getting that time again, when school starts and the kids are going to be gone for six or more hours a day. This is for most parents a time when they breathe a sigh of relief, and have the house to themselves for a little while. It is also a time when adults young and old are also going back to school. Community colleges, universities, and trade schools all over the country are taking enrollment or welcoming returning students.
There are many reasons why adults are going back to school. For those who just graduated last year it is simply the next step to achieving their education goals. There are many different fields they may be considering, and in today’s high tech world many understand that a simple high school diploma is not enough to succeed in the world. You need higher education in order to get into the careers that are and will become available. Because they are getting into adulthood, they are now really starting to become aware of the struggles their parents are going through, and want to make sure they are not going to be stuck in the same dead end jobs their parents may be in.
For older adults, there are even more important reasons to get into college and university. Many adults have found that the jobs they have are going nowhere, without much opportunity for advancement. They are finding that the positions they may be in are being downsized, or simply don’t have the job security they may have once had. They want to be able to keep up with technologies, and provide a better life for themselves and their families. They may be tired of just making ends meet, and want to be able to save for their children’s education, have some kind of retirement, etc. As much as some may not like to admit, jealousy can be a big contributing factor, seeing a younger generation fill positions above them. More and more older adults are finding themselves working under younger bosses, and this may not sit well with them.
For whatever the reason, one thing’s for sure, getting a better education these days is a must. One of the biggest problems people who are trying to get into these colleges and universities are facing is the high cost of education. Tuition seems to be getting higher and higher, then there are books, and other materials. These days many students just can’t get around the fact that some type of laptop or notebook computer is a must, and while some colleges may provide one, this is not always the case. While these are a must have, they can be expensive, costing hundreds of dollars, further cutting into a student’s budget. Then you have living expenses, from rent to food and other essentials.
So what can a person do when they want to go to school but are on a tight budget? Many colleges offer student loans, with the enticement that these don’t have to be paid back until after graduation. The problem is that in many cases you are incurring debt whether or not you aren’t required to start paying it back until after you graduate. Some of these courses and degrees are long, taking up two to five years or more, and after you could be hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt without even getting your dream job yet. However, while it may not replace these loans, education grants can put a big dent in them. An education grant can come in many different forms, and most people are familiar with a PELL grant, but there are many others.
For those that don’t know, an education grant is money that doesn’t have to be paid back. While some grants have to be specifically used for education purposes, tuition, books, laptop and supplies, other education grants can be used for just about anything that relates to your education, even living expenses. Grants for education are different from scholarships, because a grant is given based on need, rather than academic achievement. There are literally hundreds of different grants available, to people from all walks of life, from impoverished people to single moms, disabled people, and just about anyone who has a need.
Education grants are available on many levels, from federal, state and locally. However there are times when finding your grant can be difficult. You can’t just call the white house and ask for a grant, you have to go through channels, fill out forms and other paperwork. In addition you also have to need the grant. Some grants are given for certain fields, like healthcare or education. Other grants are given by specific organizations, or foundations. For an example if you are a Native American, you may be able to get a grant through your tribal elder organization.
The big thing is finding an education grant that is geared towards your needs. While there are many different resources available online, many of these are quite vague. They may show a long list of grants that are available, but don’t offer any specific information on how to get them, or the requirements needed to qualify. It is not only important to find good education grants, but also how to actually get these grants.
There is a resource you can use to help you find these grants. It is called Grants.org, located at http://educationgrant.org/grants/. They can help you in a number of different ways. They have a complete list of grants available, as well as scholarships, student loans that are cheap, and financial aid lists. Instead of just giving you a list of the grants and aid, this site actually includes what each one requires, as well as a link to the forms you need to fill out for getting it. These days people who are looking to get a better education, for whatever the reason, need all the help that is out there for them, and this website is a valuable resource to help you get the money you need.
It is important to read through these different education grants carefully. Some have specific requirements, others have deadlines where you have to apply before a certain date in order to get the grant. In addition you have to understand that you are not the only one looking for these grants, so you should fill out the applications and forms as early as possible so you have a better chance of getting them.
