What is a student attendance system and why would a school need one? An attendance system is an electronic system that monitors a student’s attendance throughout the day, as the go from class to class, as well as when they attend any events like dances, sports, and even assemblies. Each enrolled student now carries a student ID card, which, along with printed information includes either a magnetic strip or a bar code. When the student goes to class or attends an event they pass their ID by the monitoring reader, and some systems even record this information automatically. The strip or code contains their information, age, class, grade, etc, and this information is relayed to a central processing unit for recording.
It used to be that teachers took attendance each morning and for each class. This could be unreliable to say the least. A student could show up for five minutes then skip a class. They could even have one of their friends call in for them and just not show up at all. Teachers also had to rely on their memory and a written record of attendance which is not always reliable.
These days it is very important that schools keep an accurate record of each student’s attendance, and for many reasons. Many schools are held accountable for attendance, and are funded by the government. If they show a lower attendance overall, then this funding could also be lower. Because budgets are extremely tight, schools need to keep a record of how many students are attending events. If turnout to a dance is not that great for an example, it is possible that school officials may end up cancelling this dance in the future, or at the very least downsize it in order to save money.
Knowing your exact attendance is also important so your school can keep track on a day-to-day basis. This way the school can send out notices to parents, and decide whether or not a student has missed so much school they are considered a dropout. Because many schools don’t really know each and every student on an individual basis, this is a method that they can use to find out if a student is having problems attending classes. It’s not just about whether or not to consider them a dropout, but to also be able to help them avoid this situation. Let’s face it, school can be stressful, especially on the university and college level. Not all students may be willing to admit they are having problems, and this is a way a school can identify and hopefully correct a problem before it gets to the point that the student drops out.
These are just some of the many different reasons a school would implement a student attendance system to monitor students’ activities. It is important to keep track of these things on many levels. However it is also important that you find a company that has the best monitoring systems, at a price that schools can afford. You can search the internet, but the choices can often be a little overwhelming. If your school is located in the UK, there is a company that specializes in student attendance system monitoring.
If you are looking to capture the future, then do so with Telepen. This company offers the Onyx student monitoring system, and comes in two different designs. One is the Onyx Collector. This system automatically records attendance by picking up the code embedded in the student’s ID card. They don’t even have to scan their card, as long as they have it on them, or in their bag, the system records their attendance. This unit keeps a record to coincide with a students scholarship, as well as the requirements to keep the school sponsorship. This system is based on Telepen’s more than three decades of monitoring experience. The Advantage system is similar, but may be more affordable to schools and universities. You can find out more information about Telepen, as well as their monitoring systems at telepen.co.uk.
