There are many people out there who have a lot of bad habits, and don’t really realize their costs until it’s too late. Some of these costs are up front, like having to pay for them, others it isn’t until down the line when you have to deal with problems that arise because you have them. Some habits can cost you even years after you have managed to break them. While we can’t mention them all, let’s look a how much two of the most common habits cost, both in the short term, as well as the long term.
Let’s start with one of the most common habits, drinking alcohol. We’re not talking about the people who drink on occasion, or that like to let loose on the weekends. We’re talking about the person who always has some kind of drink in their hand, the wine glass, the beer or hard cider, the liqueur. They seem like they’re always drinking, after work, in the evening, all weekend long. These costs usually add up fast. Sure that 12 pack of beer can by itself be under twenty dollars, but if you are buying 2 or more of these each and every day, that can add up to hundreds of dollars a week. Times that by a year and these costs could be in the tens of thousands. So much for going on that dream vacation.
Let’s look at the long term costs of drinking. People don’t like to put up with drunks for a long time, and it doesn’t matter if you’re a happy drunk or not. So eventually you are going to lose your good friends and family. Then if you are someone who drinks and drives, chances are you are going to eventually get pulled over or have accident. Gods forbid you hurt or kill someone. Even if you’re lucky enough not to involve anyone else, you are going to lose your vehicle, your job, and spend tens of thousands of dollars on legal fees. The prolonged health problems are even worse, liver damage, kidney problems, brain damage, the list goes on. It will shorten your life almost as bad as the next habit we’re going to talk about, smoking.
While not as prominent as a few decades ago, smoking is still one of the number one bad habits across the country. Smoking is expensive. The average pack of brand name cigarettes can be 4-5 dollars, more depending on what state you live in. Even if you buy them by the carton, this can be as much as $50 or more. You’re talking easily tens of thousands of dollars a year.
Smoking is bad and costly to you in a number of other ways. You may not get that great job because of your smoking. It affects your body, damages your lungs, your heart, your brain. It makes you age faster, which shows on the outside as well as the inside. Even if you stop smoking, these effects don’t always go away. You’re hurting yourself, and if you smoke around other people, you can make them sick as well. Hospital bills can be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
A cheaper and healthier alternative to cigarettes is of course the E cigarette. While cigarettes are banned in many public places, you can smoke on these alternatives, and they don’t cost nearly as much as cigarettes do, They are a much ‘safer’ alternative, and they don’t affect those around you.
