Sleep deprivation affects millions of people each and every day. What is it? Put simply it is not getting enough sleep at night. This means deep, restful sleep. Many people may go to bed fairly early, but are sitting watching television for a few more hours, or they don’t sleep soundly, waking up multiple times during the night. It is possible to sleep through the night, but if you aren’t getting the deep sleep you need, you are still going to wake up sleep deprived.
What are some of the causes of sleep deprivation? Well we have mentioned a couple of them already. Other reasons for lack of sleep include but aren’t limited to drinking too much caffeine before bedtime, or alcohol. Stress can be a major factor in sleep deprivation, as well as worrying about things too much. Many people are stressed out and worrying about their jobs, being able to pay bills, or feed their families. Being sick can also contribute to lack of sleep, especially if you have nasal congestion, or keep waking up coughing or hurting in general. Pain is another reason why people don’t get enough sleep. Snoring can cause lack of sleep to, both the person who is snoring, and the one next to them.
There are many signs of not getting enough sleep at night. One of them is waking up as tired as you were when you went to bed. Grogginess, lack of concentration during the day, and feeling like you are going to fall asleep during the day are all signs you didn’t get enough sleep the night before. If you simply can’t stay alert, if you have problems focusing on the tasks at hand, or forget things a lot can also be signs. Over an extended period of time, the lack of sleep has other effects. Your mind and body can start to shut down. Your motor functions start to deteriorate. You can actually get sick from lack of sleep.
You need 7-8 hours of sleep each night, to be able to awaken fresh and alert. It can take time for your body to relax completely. It can take up to two hours or more to go from light sleep to deep, REM sleep, or Rapid Eye Movement sleep. REM sleep is deep, dreaming sleep where your mind and body get the most rest. You really need 4-6 hours of REM sleep in order for your body to completely rest from the day’s activities.
The problem is that some people just have a hard time not only getting to sleep, but staying asleep. Many people want to be able to get a full night’s sleep, but don’t want to resort to medications that may become addicting. In truth there are many natural ways to fall and stay asleep. Here are just a few of them. Stop drinking coffee and other sugary, caffeinated drinks at least three hours before going to bed. Not only do these drinks keep you awake, they can wake you in the middle of the night having to go to the bathroom. If you are tensed up, try to relax with a nice hot shower or bath. Try not to eat greasy, fried, or spicy foods before bedtime, this can cause acid reflux and keep you awake. Many people do meditation to help them relax, or heavy exercises in order to wear out their body.
