If you are having problems sleeping or are waking up feeling as tired as you went to bed, you aren’t alone. We can’t mention them all, but here are some of them.
Insomnia; Most common, this disorder includes symptoms like not being able to get to sleep, or waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to settle back down. There are many reasons for this disorder. Some people worry about problems so much that even after laying down their mind just can’t shut off. Depression, anxiety, and other problems can cause it. Sometimes it is just a matter of not drinking coffee or other caffeinated liquids before bed. You may need to find a way to relax before bed, like a hot shower, or meditation, or setting up a specific bedtime routine. It it persists, then it may be a good idea to contact your doctor to see if it isn’t something more serious.
Sleep Apnea; This is an extremely serious condition, where you stop breathing for extended periods of time. This is often caused by some kind of blockage of the air passage, and usually is accompanied by loud snoring. You may even wake up in the middle of the night and not even realize it. The biggest problem is that sleep apnea is life threatening, mostly because of the lack of oxygen to your brain, which in severe cases can cause a stroke. If you suspect that you have this disorder, it is important that you see your doctor. You may have to wear a device at night called a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure unit, which you wear like a mask.
Restless Leg Syndrome; This disorder can be extremely annoying. It is basically the irresistible need to move your legs when you are laying down. You legs may feel tingly, or you may have cramps in your legs, that get better once you move them around. No one is quite sure what causes this, and there are many different treatments from cold or heat packs on the affected areas, meditation or exercise, and many others. If none of these work, you may need to see your doctor for help.
Snoring; One of the most common sleep disorders is of course snoring. Not only does it affect the person snoring, but often those around them. There are many different causes, from a relaxation of the soft palate at the back of the throat, being overweight, your sleeping position, even excessive alcohol consumption, just to name a few. This too can keep you or your partner up at night, having to turn over, or being woken up multiple times at night.
Luckily, snoring is such a common problem that there are numerous products that can help you stop snoring. This really is where the problem is. There are sprays, lozenges, and apparatus that you place on your nose or in your mouth that can help prevent snoring. Some work, others don’t, and some of them are expensive. It is hard to find the right one without trial and error, buying the product and using it to find out if it works.
