It's not easy to impress venture capitalists, but David Karp has done just that. He's managed to do a lot with very little, which should be the ultimate goal of any entrepreneur. With a small, initial Series A investment of $775,000, one other full time employee, two other part-time employees, and a passion to make his users happy, he's been able to grow Tumblr to over 15 million unique visitors and to over 500,000 publishers in about a year. His success resulted in a follow on Series B investment today of $4.5 million by Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures.
However, Tumblr is not quite a micro-blogging platform like Twitter, nor a full blown blogging platform like WordPress or Drupal. It's somewhere inbetween, with posts nicknamed "tumblelogs":
These "tumblelogs" are a variation of blogs that favor short-form, mixed-media posts over the longer editorial posts frequently associated with blogging. Common post formats found on tumblelogs include links, photos, quotes, songs, dialogues, and video.
