Understanding the Importance of Sleep For College Students

For college students, it can be easy to get caught up in the busy pace and schedule of work and school, and push sleep down to the lowest priority on the list of things to get done. School can seem like an extra bonus feature of life, one that is not absolutely necessary for survival.
The truth of the matter is that sleep absolutely is necessary for survival. Many college students claim that they feel tired during the day, and yet they still do not make the changes necessary to accommodate more sleep.
Studies have shown that college students are the demographic of people that are the most tired and sleep-deprived. College students across the country average at less than six hours of sleep per night.
That is not enough sleep for a college student’s mind to stay active and alert during the day. Many factors can contribute to the fact that college students get so little sleep.
One of the main reasons is because of academics themselves. Being enrolled in school can be quite the stressor on a person’s life, mind, and body.
There are assignments to complete, group meetings to attend, and projects to plan, and the stress can add up very quickly. Chances are if you’re attending California College San Diego in San Marcos, you’re also working at least a part-time job, if not a full-time job.
Balancing work and school can be very difficult, because it just seems like there isn’t time to do much. Every hour of your day is filled up with rushing to and fro, and there doesn’t seem to be time to finish your schoolwork, let alone have any leisure time.
This pile of things to do and items to compete can often leave little time for good, quality sleep. Missing a good night’s sleep here and there does not do much damage to the body, but problems arise when getting minimal sleep becomes a habit.
When you do not get enough sleep on a consistent basis, your body is not getting the opportunity it needs to recharge and be refreshed to meet each new day. In short, if you’re not getting enough sleep, you’re slowly running your body into the ground.
It becomes quite the paradox because those who are very committed to school tend to get less sleep, but then do more poorly in school because the lack of sleep affects their ability to concentrate and stay on top of their schoolwork. There isn’t really a golden answer as to how to start getting more sleep.
The answer really is that you’ve got to try harder to get a full night’s rest. You can’t expect to meet your goal every night, but it’s important to try.
Set a bedtime for yourself, and try to be in bed by that time as often as you can. Try to shift things around in your mind so that sleep becomes more of a priority in your life.
Consistently getting a good night’s rest will greatly help you succeed during your time at California College San Diego in San Marcos, and will also set you on the path to a more healthy and well-rounded lifestyle.
